About Nic

Don’t let the formality of Pier Nicola D’Amico’s name fool you. Nic, as he’s known to friends and clients alike, grew up skateboarding and spray-painting his way through the streets of Philadelphia. He eventually made his way to New York City to study at The Cooper Union School of Art. While there, Nic experimented with the formal and technical intersections between painting and photography. Little did he know that those early experiments would lead him to the development of an innovative photographic style that would put him on the vanguard of advertising photography today.

Nic came to commercial photography over twenty years ago. With all of those years of experience he’s watched trends come and go and he’s made it a point to be ahead of the curve by pushing the limits of his own style and the technology itself. When Nic embraced digital capture and post to augment the look of his photographs, the practice was in its nascent stages. Through his commitment to learning and his ambition to make compelling images, he now stands as one of the most stylish innovators of photography and the digital panoply.

It’s no surprise then that Nic’s clients greatly value his expertise both on set and in the digital studio. His command of the medium is as reassuring as it is exciting to the clients and assistants who get to witness Nic in action. With that said, Nic is not a fussy artiste, demanding his way or the highway. In fact, one of the things his clients appreciate most is his ability to listen and to distill their ideas into something truly effective, creative, iconic.

The creation of Nic’s photographs is in many ways an artistic collaboration. Nic’s interpretation sets the ball in motion, but the skill and expertise of his staff and most certainly the input of his clients all help to shape the look of the final photograph. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, Nic has developed a style that works for a vast array of subjects, from still life to supermodel, professional athlete to little old lady, politician to musical superstar. Under his skillful direction and artful handling, Nic transforms even the most common subject into a compelling and eye-catching work of art, deserving of the attention each one of his images so often receives.

Pennsylvania Ballet BTS

Last month I directed a TV spot for the Pennsylvania Ballet’s upcoming collaboration with world renowned ballet director Angel Corella on ‘Le Corsaire’. Here are a few shots that were taken behind the scenes of that production. Check out ‘Le Corsaire’ when it runs in Philadelphia from March 9th through the 19th and stay tuned for more ballet work coming out of DSI within the next few months.

Museum of the American Revolution Behind the Scenes

Here are a handful of behind the scenes shots from DSI’s latest project with Philadelphia’s newest attraction, the Museum of the American Revolution. Our models were all professional re-enactors and every historically authentic prop, wig and piece of clothing was straight from the 18th century. Thank you for all those involved in this incredible shoot and don’t forget to check out the new museum on April 19th, 2017!

Speck Shoot Behind the Scenes

These are a few behind the scenes shots from a wonderful shoot we did last year with Speck Products and Red Tettemer O’Connell+Partners. For the unique look I used a technique known as light painting, requiring long exposure times and perfect synchronization with our models. See the results in the post above.

Between Glam Rock and New Wave

The Artist’s Statement

Before.

Before the Internet, before New Wave and the new world order, before the rise of the neocons and the fall of the Berlin Wall, before the music video, before digital art, before the tweet and cell and the selfie, there was a sliver in time that was the early punk movement.

This is the irreverent chronicle of young artist’s journey through the punk subculture of the late 70’s and early 80’s. They are analogue photographs that I printed with my own, punk hands; then lost, then found again.
